At the same period last year, Newcastle United was struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table, and fans were wary that their club could end up relegated.
Although the club has lost their Premier League status at the end of last season, they are now firmly at the top of the Championship, and chances are they will be back in the Premier League next season. Fans are clearly appreciative of the work accomplished by Rafael Benitez, and they will be hoping that the Spanish manager stays around for a long time.
Indeed the relegation would have probably become a nightmare for most fans if the Spanish manager did not agree to manage the club in the Championship. They knew that by having a manager with such experience they should be able to get out of the Championship sooner rather than later.
Now they will be hoping that the manager has a great vision for the club that will allow them to not only get back in the Premier League but also challenge for trophies. Indeed a big club such as Newcastle United should be able to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal for trophies and fans will feel that Benitez will be the right man to bring the club forward.
Many pundits believe that the club will provide resources for Benitez to build a competitive squad that will allow them to challenge for trophies once they are back in the Premier League. However, they will first have to get their promotion back to the Premier League before starting to plan for next season. The second half of the season might prove to be more difficult as all the other teams will want to beat the promotion favorites.
