CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE NEWCASTLE DEFEAT NORWICH 4-3

Former Premier League side Newcastle United defeated Norwich 4-3 in the English Championship in midweek football.

The seven-goal thriller saw United come back from being 3-1 down to winning the game. Two goals were scored in stoppage time to ensure the Magpies picked up maximum point from the game.

“I am the kind of manager who gets excited, but especially inside because I am really proud when I see the team reacting. I am really proud of them. Some people will jump or run or whatever, but I am happy inside because I think it’s something that’s difficult to achieve,” Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said after the game. Newcastle enjoyed more of the ball possession, had more shots – about 22 –compared to Norwich.

It was a Dwight Gayle night as the player was impressive for United. Gayle could have scored much earlier in the game as he had two clear chances. However, he got the breakthrough from a Matt Ritchie’s cross in the 24th minute.

Norwich who hadn’t threatened much got an equalizer through a Graham Dorrans penalty just before half time. After the break, the visitors caught Newcastle on the counter. Cameron Jerome curled the ball home in the 52nd minute, and then Jacob Murphy got the third in the 69th minute. The visitors were set to get a rousing victory until Newcastle resurrected.

The hosts put intense pressure on Norwich. Yoan Gouffran, who caused the foul that led to Norwich’s first goal, got the second for United as he scored from close range after DeAndre Yedlin sent a cross. Gayle got two late goals in the stoppage time to seal the three points for United. The victory sends Newcastle to third place from ninth, while denying Norwich the chance to go clear at the top. Huddersfield are top of the table with 22 points from ten games.
